Abstract
Workload data are provided for courts of appeals, district courts, bankruptcy courts, magistrates, and probation. District court information is categorized by civil and criminal cases, petit juror use, and grand juror use. Bankruptcy filings, bankruptcy terminations, pending estates, business bankruptcies, and adversary proceedings are covered by the data on bankruptcy courts. The status of judgeship positions is also considered in the section on judicial business. In the section on judicial administration, the report of the Division of Information Systems briefly describes activities completed during the year, projects initiated in 1980-81, and plans which have been underway. The Statistical Analysis and Reports Division discusses Federal judicial statistics as a growth industry, publications, data collection, data acquisition, training, and the new report program. Other topics discussed under judicial administration are administrative services, personnel, clerks of court, probation, U.S. magistrates, centralized bankruptcy courts, revision in statistical reporting, computerization of notices and claims, technical assistance, and the Criminal Justice Act. Judicial appropriations and expenditures are presented for fiscal 1981 and 1982, and enhancements to the financial management system are described. Appended is the detailed statistical analysis of the workload of the Federal courts during the reporting period.
