EXAMINATION OF THE TYPE OF OFFENSES WHICH BRING FEMALE JUVENILE OFFENDERS INTO THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE NATURE OF THE CASE DISPOSITIONS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR REFERS TO TWO JUVENILE CORRECTIONS AND COURT STUDIES IN ARGUING THAT MOST FEMALE JUVENILE OFFENDERS WHO ARE HELD IN THE CUSTODY OF A DETENTION HOME OR SENT TO A TRAINING SCHOOL HAVE NEVER BEEN CHARGED WITH ANY OFFENSE THAT WOULD RESULT IN IMPRISONMENT FOR ADULTS OR FOR BOYS. HE IDENTIFIES THE RELATIVE LACK OF COMMUNITY TREATMENT FACILITIES FOR DELINQUENT GIRLS AS THE REASON FOR THE HIGH RATE OF TRAINING SCHOOL RECOMMENDATIONS BY THE JUVENILE COURT AND SUGGESTS AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR DELINQNENT GIRLS. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS INCLUDED.
