This article considers the findings from some studies of adolescent maltreatment.
Abstract
Three themes reviewed are (1) how the maltreatment of adolescents compares to the maltreatment of younger children, (2) what constitutes family dynamics of adolescent maltreatment, and (3) what factors impede the identification of and provision of services to maltreated adolescents and their families. Practice and policy implications inherent in the current findings are discussed. Recommendations include a preventive policy that would prohibit corporal punishment in the schools and the teaching of life management skills. Additional recommendations are reporting of adolescent abuse, the provision of supportive services for runaway youth, and innovative service programs that will experiment with new models of intervention in work with adolescents and families. 36 references.
