This kit of instructional materials and resources related to juvenile drug treatment in residential and community settings aims to support adolescents who are recovering from drug dependence and includes a facilitator’s manual, worksheets for copying and distribution to the adolescent participants, a comic book, and a manual for parents.
Abstract
The treatment program provides a cognitive and experiential approach to recovery, with emphasis on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The program’s four phases include accepting responsibility, deciding to make changes, making important changes through specific actions that replace harmful habits with positive alternatives, and preventing relapse. Topics include becoming honest, the facts about drugs and addiction, learning to trust again, successful relationships, family relationships, forgiveness, developing a plan against relapse, and others. Each phase includes a certification program that allows the adolescent to receive recognition for appropriate completion. The kit also includes a medallion and wristband as symbols that the program can give to the adolescent. The facilitator’s manual advises facilitators to select and package the most appropriate exercises for each adolescent. It presents and suggests uses of the materials for four scenarios ranging from a youth who will have a short time in treatment and is in denial about the addiction to a youth who has demonstrated a commitment and work ethic toward recovery but has had several relapses when not in a structured setting. The parent and family guide presents seven exercises to help parents and other family members strengthen their family and help their adolescent recover from addiction. The comic book provides an overview of the program. Worksheets, checklists, medallion, and wristband
