After reviewing the nature and scope of the HIV and AIDS epidemic among adolescents as well as the risk factors for adolescents to become infected with the HIV, this booklet describes the content and strategies of an HIV prevention program for adolescents.
Abstract
The booklet advises that HIV prevention programs for adolescents should have six primary goals. They are to present accurate information on HIV infection and its transmission, encourage teens to delay the initiation of sexual intercourse, ensure that those having intercourse use condoms consistently and effectively, reduce experimentation with drugs and prevent intravenous drug use, provide information on community resources, and promote compassion for those infected. Recommended information for education encompasses how HIV is and is not transmitted, how to protect oneself from HIV, and information on additional resources. A section on delivering the message covers information and approach, integration of prevention messages, the choice and training of leaders, teen involvement in HIV education, the involvement of people with AIDS/HIV infection, and material selection. The concluding section describes how to make HIV prevention a communitywide effort. 40 references and a list of additional resources
