The literature available to practitioners seeking to develop effective treatment strategies for chemically-dependent adolescents is overwhelming in volume and confusing and contradictory in content.
Abstract
This article critically reviews the literature relevant to this population. This paper highlights incidence, prevalence, patterns, correlates and consequences of use, and their implications for social work treatment, research, and policy. The paper concludes that sound assessments with adolescents must involve evaluation of physical, social, family, and intrapsychic factors. Group and family therapies may be the treatments of choice because of the significance of peer relationships and family dynamics in the development and/or maintenance of chemical dependency. 61 references.
