A 1988 workshop gathered the views of approximately 400 secondary students in the Toronto area of Ontario, Canada regarding domestic assault and methods of reducing it.
Abstract
Approximately 100 guidance counselors and teachers also attended the workshop. The morning sessions presented information on the nature and causes of child abuse, the incidence of wife abuse, the impact of abuse on battered women and their children, the cause of male violence in families, current programs in social service agencies, and the changing role of the justice system. Afternoon discussion groups generated suggestions for improving education on family violence issues, encouraging victims to obtain help, improving communication among family members, challenging current stereotypes and values, and increasing the availability of peer support. Students also recommended increased self-help efforts, more media publicity, and changed legislation. Figures, table, and 31 references.
