This article describes a four-step process for assessing a company's compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
Abstract
The ADA requires that businesses and other institutions remove all physical and procedural barriers that impede persons with disabilities from the full enjoyment of all of life's expectations. This involves the removal of all restrictive policies, programs, facilities, and communications that obstruct the rights of disabled persons. The four-step assessment process described in this article identifies what an organization must do to comply with ADA requirements. Step one specifies the areas that fail to comply with the ADA. Step two develops a compliance or preventive management program. Step three installs the program, and step four involves program maintenance and oversight. The auditor responsible for ADA compliance uses the four-step method to assess a facility's programs. Other team members involved in ergonomic, fire and life safety, and walking and working surfaces provide information on physical and communications barriers observed during assessment tours. This process produces a consensus in the organization regarding what must be done to achieve organizational compliance with ADA.
