As the frequency and severity of personal harassment are just beginning to be uncovered, the psychologist author of this book uses the voices of both bullies and victims to reveal the misery endured by many adults.
Abstract
He describes the processes that turn child bullies into adult bullies who are often aware of their behavior but are unable to stop it. Further, he notes that the workplace and the neighborhood replace the playground even though tactics and reward patterns of bullying remain the same and that the adult victim has little or no more power than the child counterpart. In response to workplace bullying, individuals often change jobs to escape bullying. Similarly, managers often fail to deal with victim complaints in accordance with the seriousness the problem deserves and instead prefer to believe such complaints are overstated. Effective ways to deal with bullying in the workplace and in the community are discussed, with particular emphasis on the implications of bullying for managers and employees. Consideration is also paid to the positive reinforcement of bullying and the creation of bullying and victim personalities, and case studies are included. 248 references
