This report presents comparative data on corrections programs in each of the 16 States in the Southern Legislative Conference.
Abstract
Data for the report were taken from questionnaires completed in late summer 2000 by each of the 16 States (AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, MO, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV). The report includes statistics and narrative discussions regarding: (1) Inmate Population Trends and Incarceration Rates; (2) Prison and Jail Capacities; (3) Budgetary Issues; (4) Staffing Patterns and Inmate Violent Incidents; (5) Projected Costs of New Prisons; (6) Probation and Parole; (7) Rehabilitation; (8) Prison Industries; and (9) Privatization. In addition, there are profiles of the 16 member States. The profiles included, but were not limited to, selected characteristics of adult inmates and major State initiatives. The purpose of the report was to provide legislators and staff in each State a reference document that can be used to compare Corrections Programs in a particular State to others throughout the southern region. The report attempts to adjust inconsistencies resulting from differences in interpretations of corrections data.
