Each chapter of this book presents the history, current profile and issues being faced, and future directions of a country's adult corrections system, with the following countries selected: Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Namibia, Romania, and the United States.
Abstract
Each chapter is written by a person with academic and/or practical/professional knowledge of the correctional system described. Each chapter opens with basic facts about the country, which includes the geographic size, population size, the climate, the economy, and type of government. This is followed by a brief history of the country's corrections that provides an understanding of how various historic periods, political regimes, cultural values, and individuals have influenced and molded correctional policies and practices in the country. The next section of each chapter profiles the current structure, policies, and practices of the country's correctional system, followed by an identification and brief discussion of the correctional issues currently in the forefront of debates on policy and practice. Most chapters also include a section that profiles the population of offenders. Where appropriate, the country's compliance with United Nations conventions and/or covenants that pertain to corrections is also discussed. This anthology is intended for upper level undergraduate courses and/or graduate level seminars on comparative corrections. As such, each chapter contains study and discussion questions along with Web-links and references.
