This manual describes the reception and classification procedures used for placing adult offenders in appropriate levels of supervision in Illinois correctional institutions.
Abstract
Essentially, classification attempts to balance prisoners' basic needs with public protection and safety. Crucial variables which help predict offenders' future behavior include violence, maladjustment, and recidivism. Prediction of future behaviors becomes the basis for effective and efficient placement of residents within correctional institutions. Placement recommendations must reflect security level, special needs, and administrative concerns. In most cases, the inmate's security level will determine placement. The manual discusses record office procedures, bureau of identification procedures, medical procedures, as well as reception and classification procedures. Such aspects of the inmate's status as current medical condition, offense, employment history, and escape risk are considered in the report information which comprises the classification profile. A criminal history form and computer run instructions are appended.
