POPULATION PROFILE, PROBATIONER PRIORITIES, AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH THESE NEEDS ARE BEING MET.
Abstract
PROBATION OFFICERS IN SANTA CLARA WERE ASKED TO SELECT A SAMPLE OF CLIENTS, RATE THEIR NEEDS AT THAT TIME, AND PROVIDE DEMOGRAPHIC DATA. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT EMPLOYMENT AND PERSONAL-INTERPERSONAL COUNSELING ARE THE TWO MOST FREQUENTLY MENTIONED PROBATIONER NEEDS WHICH ARE NOT PRESENTLY BEING SATISFIED. EMPLOYMENT EMERGED AS THE GREATEST SINGLE NEED. THE STUDY ALSO SHOWED THAT CERTAIN NEEDS TEND TO BE CHARACTERISTIC OF GIVEN DEMOGRAPHIC GROUPS - E.G., MALES AND FEMALES, OR RACIAL GROUPS. THERE ARE STRONG INDICATIONS THAT IF EXISTING PROBATION RESOURCES CAN BE REALLOCATED, PROBATION SERVICES CAN BE STRENGTHENED. THIS APPROACH ENTAILS THE DIAGNOSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF RESOURCES, OFFENDERS, AND RESOURCE - OFFENDER MATCHING. IT IS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT MANY OFFENDERS BE PLACED IN A STATUS WHICH WOULD REQUIRE FORMAL SUPERVISION ONLY WHEN SPECIFICALLY PRESCRIBED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
