Abstract
THE CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR ATTORNEYS SPONSORED BY THE PRACTISING LAW INSTITUTE PRODUCED THE HANDBOOK ON ADVANCED CRIMINAL TRIAL TACTICS AS AN EDUCATIONAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE LECTURE SERIES. THE HANDBOOK ADDITIONALLY SERVES AS A REFERENCE MANUAL FOR PRACTITIONERS AND RELATED PROFESSIONALS. THE LECTURE ON REASONABLE DOUBT TREATS DEFENSE STRATEGIES FOR RAISING DOUBT AT TRIAL AND HOW THE PROSECUTION CAN AVOID IT. METHODS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF EXPERT TESTIMONY ARE OFFERED, COMPARING DIRECT AND CROSS-EXAMINATION OF AN EXPERT WITNESS BY BOTH PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE COUNSEL. USE OF PSYCHOLOGISTS AND PATHOLOGISTS AS WITNESSES IS REVIEWED. THE MANAGEMENT OF HIGHLY-PUBLICIZED CASES IS EXAMINED, WITH CONSIDERATION OF THE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS OF DEALING WITH THE PRESS, CHANGING VENUE, AND CONTROLLING CLIENTS. TECHNIQUES FOR DELIVERING AN EFFECTIVE CLOSING ARGUMENT ARE PRESENTED IN COMPARATIVE DEMONSTRATIONS FOR DEFENDING AND PROSECUTING ATTORNEYS. VOIR DIRE, THE ART AND SCIENCE OF JURY SELECTION, IS EXAMINED WITH EMPHASIS ON THE USE OF CHALLENGES. NOTES AND REFERENCES ARE FURNISHED. FOR SELECTED READINGS, SEE NCJ 55872-55877. (TWK)
