Advanced techniques for use of the short baton by police officers are explained and illustrated.
Abstract
Defensive techniques that use a minimum number of movements for responding to a maximum number of types of encounter are described for those already familiar with the short baton. Over 50 techniques fall into 7 categories. Strong/weak hand grip techniques are the most efficient methods for removing the baton from the ring. Strong/weak hand-striking techniques from the ring are used to protect the officer from injury. Interrogation defenses, blocking defenses, baton takeaways, and come-along techniques can prevent a suspect from striking out at an officer. Search control techniques enable an officer to search a suspect safely. Administrators must examine the quality and applicability of training efforts to avoid charges of liability by aggrieved parties under the theory of vicarious liability. A description of the liability categories that are directly applicable to any baton training program is provided. A performance-based evaluation instrument corresponding directly with the training format illustrated within each section is also included.
