This paper describes what authors believe are the major advances, the areas of debate and future directions of sexual offender treatment.
Abstract
In the decade of the 1990's, major changes and advances in the field of sexual offender treatment took place. This paper highlights the major contributions of sexual offender treatment to understand the treatment process, procedures, and techniques. The areas presented reflect what the authors believe are the most influential changes and advances influencing the provision of treatment and fostering empirical investigation. Within the area of advances in sexual offender treatment, the paper discusses relapse prevention and the use of psychopharmacologic agents as the two major advances of the last decade. In addition, major advances were seen in the development of actuarial prediction tools for recidivism and a move toward phallmetric stimuli. These advancements have given treatment providers a wider array of treatment options to help their patients to control their offending behavior. However, the major challenge for the future is to develop methodologically sound research in order to base decisions about the treatments to apply, the unique needs of special populations, and the assessment of dangerousness.
