THE JEFFERSON COUNTY (AL) SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT USES A RADIO-CONTROLLED MODEL AIRPLANE TO COMBAT SNIPERS WHILE KEEPING THE VISIBILITY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL AT A MINIMUM.
Abstract
THE PLANE, WHICH WEIGHS BETWEEN SIX AND EIGHT POUNDS, WITH SPEEDS ATTAINABLE UP TO 60 MILES PER HOUR, CAN DELIVER A PAYLOAD OF ONE TO TWO POUNDS, WHETHER IT BE EXPLOSIVES, TEAR GAS, OR SMOKE SCREEN. WITH THE CAPABILITY OF FLYING THROUGH A SPACE AS SMALL AS A WINDOW, THE PLANE COULD PROVE LETHAL JUST BY STRIKING ITS TARGET WITHOUT A PAYLOAD. THE AUTHOR ENVISIONS MANY OTHER APPLICATIONS (SUCH AS EMERGENCIES) FOR THE PLANE WHICH WOULD COST ABOUT 500 DOLLARS.
