This article traces the historical background of INTERPOL (International Criminal Police Organization), placing emphasis on the genesis and rationale for African membership.
Abstract
The legal bases for membership, as well as the development of the INTERPOL communication network and the role of the African states in extradition are discussed. The role of INTERPOL in Africa has been significant in helping to train police personnel, trace criminals, recover lost and stolen property, locate missing persons, and provide advice to African governments on technical matters. In addition, INTERPOL contributes to African unity and continues to benefit African States that participate in the organization. A total of 70 references are given.
