STATISTICAL STUDY OF RECIDIVISM BY A RANDOM SAMPLE OF ALL PRISONERS RELEASED FROM SWEDISH PRISONS AND A SAMPLE OF THOSE RELEASED FROM THE OPEN TILLBERGA PRISON, WHERE INMATES RECEIVE MARKET-ADJUSTED PAY FOR THE WORK THEY DO.
Abstract
INSPECTION OF THE STATISTICS SHOW THE TILLBERGA RELEASED GROUP TO HAVE A HIGHER PROPORTION OF PERSONS AGAINST WHOM NO CRIMES WERE REGISTERED FOR EACH FOLLOW-UP PERIOD OF STUDY. THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TILLBERGA GROUP AND THE COMPARISON GROUP ARE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT (BY THE CHI-SQUARE TEST) FOR THE THREE, SIX AND NINE-MONTH FOLLOW-UP PERIODS BUT NOT FOR THE 12-MONTH PERIOD. THE DIFFERENCES WERE ENTIRELY DUE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THOSE WHO HAD HAD PREVIOUS PRISON EXPERIENCE. THERE WERE VIRTUALLY NO DIFFERENCES IN THE RATES OF THOSE WHO HAD BEEN IN PRISON FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE STATISTICAL MATERIAL OBTAINED IS PROVIDED IN TABLES IN AN APPENDIX. --IN SWEDISH, WITH A SUMMARY IN ENGLISH
