THE AUTHORS HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE PRISON ENVIRONMENT RETARDS THE AGING PROCESS AND ITS EFFECT ON INMATES' GOAL ORIENTATIONS.
Abstract
THE PAPER IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS: THE FIRST COMPARES THE PARALLEL DECLINE OF OPTIMISM AMONG THE AUTOMOBILE WORKERS AND THE PRISON INMATES; THE SECOND EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VARIOUS DEFINITIONS OF AGING IN PRISON AND SOME ROUGH INDICATORS OF ANOMIE; THE THIRD CONSIDERS THESE FINDINGS IN THE CONTEXT OF A MORE GENERAL QUESTION CONCERNING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AGE AND ANOMIE.
