This manual for the Aggression Replacement Training Program (ART) -- a treatment program for aggressive youth that uses structured learning, anger control training, and moral education -describes the program and its evaluation, contains staff training manuals for each program component, explains program implementation and management, and presents future directions for program use and evaluation.
Abstract
The ART research, which was implemented at the Annsville and MacCormick facilities of the New York State Division for Youth, involved small groups (6-12) of boys in a 10-week training format that consisted of weekly classes for each program component. The structured learning component addressed the enhancement of prosocial skill levels; anger control training taught antisocial behavioral inhibition; and moral education enhanced the advancement of moral reasoning applied to behavioral choices. The evaluation showed that residents completing ART, compared to those experiencing only a motivation-enhancing experience or no training, changed significantly more on all outcome criteria. The application of social skills, moral values, and behavioral controls (both as observed and tested) was significantly more advanced for the ART participants. Appendixes present instruments for program assessment and research and methods for aiding the transfer of learned skills to real-life situations. Tables, 350 references, and subject index.
