Purposes of this book are to give police officers an overview of the aging process, to educate them, and to enhance their sensitivity to challenges and needs of the older population.
Abstract
Learning about aging can provide insights into a police officer's own aging process and provide an understanding of how aging affects parents and friends. In addition, learning about aging can help to change stereotypes or at least help police officers become aware of them. A general discussion of aging topics is followed by specific suggestions for police officers to aid them in the performance of their duties. The book provides a clear and concise overview of biological, psychological, and social dimensions of the aging process and how and why this information relates to the job of police officers. Examples of successful programs are highlighted, and extensive resources are identified for further assist police officers. The book is designed so that police officers can carry it with them in their briefcase or car seat organizer. By using the information contained in the book, police officers can become more sensitized to the problems and challenges of the aging population and can better serve the needs of senior citizens. 37 references
