This training module provides indepth information on acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and supplemental materials for students of the Maryland Natural Resources Police Academy.
Abstract
Materials define AIDS, discuss its cause (the human immunodeficiency virus), and examine its occurrence and trends nationally and locally. The major routes of transmission are examined, high-risk behaviors are outlined, and methods of prevention are explained. The difference between HIV infection, AIDS, and AIDS related complex are discussed. Also considered are HIV antibody tests and test results, the psychosocial impact of AIDS, and myths and personal feelings about AIDS. Two supplemental documents giving specific guidelines for emergency medical service personnel cover patient care practices for the prevention of AIDS, cleaning and decontamination procedures, and answers to commonly asked questions about AIDS. Also included is the 'Surgeon General's Report on AIDS,' a report on the AIDS antibody test, surveillance reports, a directory of services, and a catalog of educational and informational resources on AIDS.
