Annotation

This report describes AIDS-related policies currently in force or in development in correctional systems nationwide and delineates the policy options available to administrators in dealing with AIDS.

Abstract

Information was collected through a survey of State correctional departments, the Federal prison system, and 37 large-city and county jail systems, as well as from interviews with medical authorities and correctional officials. The author summarizes the latest medical information on AIDS and its incidence and emphasizes the importance of AIDS education programs for inmates and staff. Medical and legal issues associated with screening and testing programs designed to identify potentially infectious individuals are explored, as are other issues such as medical surveillance, counseling, and housing policies for inmates with AIDS, confidentiality of information, and liability for failure to protect other inmates and staff from AIDS.
