Nearly two decades after the emergence of the AIDS crisis in 1981, public awareness of the global scope of the epidemic and the risk of AIDS for every segment of the population has risen to new levels.
Abstract
Yet, issues of how communities and public institutions respond to the AIDS epidemic remain controversial. These issues encompass prevention education programs in schools and in the media, urban initiatives to distribute condoms and sterile needles, the confidentiality of testing procedures, and access to Federal disability benefits and insurance coverage for people with AIDS. The historical background of the AIDS epidemic and recent developments in the AIDS crisis are reviewed. The role of government, communities, and businesses in respond to AIDS is discussed. The volume also includes a chronology of the AIDS epidemic, current facts and statistics, information on legislation and court cases, a directory of hotlines and organizations, and updated lists of print and non-print resources.
