THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FIVE ANTIHIJACKING SECURITY PLANS IS MEASURED BASED ON VALUES DETERMINED THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF 146 DOMESTIC HIJACKING.
Abstract
EACH PLAN DEPENDS ON A COMBINATION OF TWO, OR MORE, SCREENING STEPS (PROFILE MATCHING, IDENTIFICATION CHECKS, METAL DETECTION, AND PHYSICAL SEARCH). THE PROBLEM WITH SUCH A SEQUENTIAL SCREENING IS THAT THE IMPERFECTNESS OF EACH STEP ALLOW SOME POTENTIAL HIJACKERS TO BOARD THE AIRCRAFT. IT WAS FOUND THAT A SEQUENTIAL PROCEDURE THAT USES A METAL DETECTOR IS LESS EFFECTIVE THAN ONE THAT DOES NOT. THE INSERTION OF A REDUNDANCY PROCEDURE INCREASED SCREENING PROCEDURE EFFECTIVENESS ENOUGH TO COMPENSATE FOR A DECREASE IN VIGILANCE BY HALF.
