The 1979-80 annual report for the Alabama Department of Public Safety presents data and descriptions of the activities of its various departments for the year.
Abstract
The highway patrol division has a total of 395 officers assigned to patrol duty. It provides 24-hour-per-day, 7-day-per-week coverage of 69,557 paved roadway miles, on which an accident occurred every 2.7 miles. The highway patrol arrested 145,292 motorists for speeding, an offense that accounts for approximately 18.9 percent of all known contributing causes of accidents. The report describes the accomplishments of the highway patrol division, including its truck accident prevention program; the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's activities, such as major crimes investigated and narcotics arrests; and the responsibilities of various other divisions, including the driver license division, service division, administrative division.
