Abstract
Alabama's Department of Public Safety is responsible for providing criminal conviction information on applicants to positions involving child care and treatment. Such information is to be confidential, and applicants are to be rejected if they have a felony conviction. In general, information collected and stored in the criminal record repository of Alabama's Department of Public Safety includes data on arrest, detention, and criminal proceedings, and criminal record information is releasable under certain conditions. Alabama's criminal justice information center is charged with establishing and operating a system for accumulating, storing, retrieving, analyzing, and disseminating vital information on certain crimes, criminals, and criminal activities. Legislation establishes guidelines for the collection and dissemination of criminal history data, the conduct of criminal investigations, and the preparation of crime reports. Legislation also addresses fingerprinting procedures, public access to criminal records, data privacy and security, criminal history dissemination policies and procedures, and personnel security.
