REPORT OF A TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MEETING IN MARCH 1974, OF CONSULTANTS KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE FIELD OF JUDICIAL REORGANIZATION, WHO OFFERED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FORMING A UNIFIED COURT SYTEM.
Abstract
A SPECIFIC INTEREST TO ALABAMA OFFICIALS WERE THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHER STATES WHICH HAD UNDERGONE THE TRANSITION FROM A FRAGMENTED COURT SYSTEM TO A UNIFIED ONE. PARTICULAR AREAS OF INTEREST WERE THOSE AREAS OF IMPLEMENTATION REQUIRING IMMEDIATE ATTENTION, THOSE AREAS CALLING FOR LONG-TERM PLANNING, AND THE NECESSARY INFORMATION ELEMENTS WHICH MUST BE AVAILABLE TO EFFECTIVELY ACCOMPLISH THE UNIFICATION PROCESS. INCLUDED IN THE REPORT, THEREFORE, ARE TOPICS COVERING THE FOLLOWING: ADMINISTRATION, JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF TRIAL COURTS, SUPREME COURT RULEMAKING POWER, FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT, THE APPELLATE PROCESS AND THE REPORTER SYSTEM, PROSECUTION IN THE TRIAL COURTS, AND INDIGENT DEFENSE IN MISDEMEANOR COURTS. FOLLOWING THE CONSULTANTS' MEETINGS, SOME OF THE CONFEREES SUBMITTED REPORTS ON SPECIFIC TOPICS, AND THESE REPORTS ARE INCORPORATED IN THE TEXT. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
