This reference guide reviews the design, classifications, and certification of commercial and residential burglar and fire alarm systems.
Abstract
Descriptions are provided of the main components of all alarms: (1) sensing devices for perimeter, area, and object protection (e.g., switches, photoelectric eyes, and ultrasonic and vibration detectors); (2) locally and centrally supervised alarm controls; and (3) local and central alarm signaling, including multiplex, direct-wire, and other systems. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) terms and standards are provided for differing classes, types, and grades of systems and their extent of protection. A question-and-answer section provides additional information on central station companies, false alarms, prearranged openings and closings, and alarm system design. Wet and dry pipe, preaction, and deluge central station sprinkler fire alarm services then are described. Also provided are the eight steps required in sprinkler system design. The major classes of automatic fire alarm systems (local, auxiliary, proprietary, and remote and central station) and their initiating, control, and signaling components are reviewed. Finally, standards for UL certification of fire protection systems are presented. A brief description of Honeywell, Inc. products and services is provided. Glossary.
