Abstract
The section on hazard communication provides information on chemical-agent and physical-agent hazards and the control of hazards via a comprehensive Hazard Communications Program that includes container labeling, material safety data sheets, physical agent data sheets, and training. The section on infection control provides basic information on how to deal with the increasing threat of infectious-disease transmission in the medical and dental office. General infection control procedures and universal precautions are outlined. A section on general safety and health guidelines for dental personnel addresses disease control, laboratory precautions for dental procedures, environmental considerations for HIV transmission, sterilization and disinfection, cleaning and decontaminating spills of blood or other body fluids, and the handling of laundry. A training program for infection control in the dental environment contains units on the principles and fundamentals of infection control, clinical procedures, and sterilization and disinfection. A continuing education test is included. A section for medical personnel covers general disease control measures, universal precautions, disease-specific precautions, viral hepatitis, HIV, pediculosis infestation, and scabies infestation.
