This report contains statistical and other pertinent data relating to narcotics and dangerous drug violations throughout Alaska for the period November 1977 through December 1978.
Abstract
In order to combat the State's drug abuse problem, narcotic and dangerous drug enforcement units were established within the Criminal Investigation Bureau in 1973. The units consist of Federal, State, and city law enforcement personnel who operate primarily in Anchorage and Fairbanks, where the problem is greatest. The report is intended to demonstrate the illicit drugs that are available and the extent of their use. Tables provide information on numbers of violations; arrests by sex, age, and charge; total narcotic and drug seizures; and U.S. District Court and Alaska State Court felony case dispositions. Comparison data for December 1974 to November 1977 are provided. In summary, State Trooper arrest numbers decreased during the report year to 821 (due to a lack of interest by prosecutors and the court system); 90 percent of the charges initiated consisted of felony offenses; 53 percent of those arrested were under 20 years of age, and 35 percent were under 17; 50 percent of the latter were arrested in school areas; and 2,604 grams of heroin, 4,324 grams of cocaine, and 1,262 pounds of marijuana were seized.
