THE ORGANIZATION AND PROCEDURES OF ALASKA'S VIOLENT CRIMES COMPENSATION BOARD ARE DESCRIBED, AND CASE SUMMARIES ARE PRESENTED OF CLAIM DECISIONS REACHED BY THE BOARD FROM JULY 1976 THROUGH JUNE 1977.
Abstract
THE BOARD WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN 1972 TO ALLEVIATE THE FINANCIAL HARDSHIPS CAUSED BY CRIME-RELATED MEDICAL EXPENSES OR LOSS OF INCOME SUSTAINED BY INNOCENT VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIMES. THE BOARD ALSO PROVIDES FOR PAYMENTS TO DEPENDENTS OF DECEASED VICTIMS. THE THREE BOARD MEMBERS ARE APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR AND ARE COMPENSATED ON A PER DIEM BASIS. A PHYSICIAN AND AN ATTORNEY ARE AMONG THE BOARD MEMBERS. THE COMPENSATION GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION-PROCESSING PROCEDURES FOLLOWED BY THE BOARD ARE OUTLINED. STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED ON THE COSTS OF BOARD OPERATIONS, THE NUMBERS AND TYPES OF CLAIMS FILED, AND THE AMOUNTS OF AWARDS. CASE SUMMARIES INCLUDE BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF THE CRIME INVOLVED, THE LOSS OF THE VICTIM, THE RATIONALE FOR THE CLAIM DECISION, AND THE AMOUNT OF THE AWARD (IF ANY). (LKM)
