The report delineates the duties and activities of the offices of Alberta's Department of the Attorney General (Canada), as well as of agencies associated with the department, for the year ending March 31, 1978, and describes Alberta's court system.
Abstract
It describes the supreme and district courts, the surrogate courts, the provincial courts, and the family and juvenile courts. Court services and caseload statistics are included. The department's offices covered involve legal representation and advice, public services, and support services. Agencies associated with the department, such as the Crimes Compensation Board and the Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Board, are also mentioned. During the year, a task force developed a hearing officer system to handle minor provincial offenses outside the criminal court, legislation was introduced that would combine the supreme court's and district court's trial division, and an automated case calendaring system was introduced in the Edmonton Provincial Court. A Crown counsel case reporting system was established, a computer-controlled system for printing government bills became operational, the first appeal of the Crimes Compensation Board decision was heard, and all 10 supreme and district branch libraries outside Edmonton and Calgary were reorganized. Tables, an organizational chart, and an appendix containing a list of acts administered by the attorney general are supplied.
