This video explains the components of the interagency project of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the National Park Service at the former Federal penitentiary at Alcatraz.
Abstract
Under a formal agreement between the Bureau of Prisons and the National Park Service, the two agencies have cooperated to renovate the facilities at Alcatraz, which had deteriorated and been damaged due to the passage of time, weather, and vandalism. The renovation included the creation of an exhibit that presents the history of Alcatraz, the Federal prison system, and Federal corrections operations. The video documents the renovation by showing Federal inmates at work to achieve project goals. It portrays the importance of the work as a cost-saving measure, as a way of preserving an important national landmark, and as an alternative work program for inmates. The video also features the historical exhibit on Federal corrections and presents interviews with some of the 1 million visitors who come to the island each year. The newly renovated facility was opened to the public in 1991.
