An evaluation of the Western Australian Probation and Parole Alcohol Education Program from June 1981 to February 1984 shows that it accomplished its goal of increasing participants' awareness of the adverse effects of alcohol abuse.
Abstract
Participants were 320 probationers and parolees (229 completed the program) having alcohol-related problems; most had been convicted of property crimes. The program consisted of five weekly 1.5-hour sessions whose curriculum alerted participants to the types of offenses associated with alcohol abuse as well as to its adverse physical and psychosocial effects. Participants were also introduced to community leisure and therapeutic facilities. The evaluation assessments included both comparison of preprogram and postprogram questionnaire scores measuring knowledge and insight gained from the program and analysis of postprogram evaluative comments gathered from participants. Both components indicated the program's effectiveness. Nine notes and graphic data are provided.
