Arrest information gathered from county jail records from a sample of 42 Indiana counties formed the primary basis of estimates of the numbers and types of arrests for drug law offenses for Indiana as a whole and for individual counties during 1989.
Abstract
The 42 counties represented about 75 percent of Indiana's population. Results revealed that 77,942 offenders were arrested in the 42 counties on drug or alcohol charges, with 86.6 percent alcohol related. Forty-three percent were arrested for drunk driving, 35 percent for public intoxication, 8 percent for liquor law violations, 6 percent for possession of marijuana, and 7 percent for dealing or possession of cocaine or other narcotic drugs. Findings indicated that 9,776 drug-related arrests and 75,566 alcohol-related arrests took place in the State during 1989. Although police records do not provide precise measures of drug arrest activity at the State or local level, they offer the best available sources of information for estimating drug arrest activity and tracking drug offenders.
