This publication, based on a 1985 workshop, provides descriptions of school-based and interagency programs aimed at alcohol and drug abuse prevention and the teenage driver in California.
Abstract
Three school-based models are described. The Youth Educator Program brings together school and community primary prevention resources to deliver a culturally relevant drug and alcohol prevention program for junior high school students and their families. The Peer Assistance League, for students in grades 2 through 12, focuses its preventive efforts on treating the underlying causes of problems and learning skills to deal with the stresses associated with everyday problems. Students Against Drunk Driving emphasizes that teenagers must take responsibility for their own behaviors. Friday Nite Live presents an antidrunk driving slide show, and Safe Rides provides a teen-operated escort service. The Tulare Committee on Teenage Alcohol Abuse, the Comprehensive Driving Under the Influence System Improvement Project, and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force exemplify multiagency approaches to public education, information dissemination, resource networking, and service delivery. Examples of additional public- and private-sector antidrunk driving resources also are provided.
