This journal issue contains papers presented at an international symposium, held in April 1992, which focused on the scientific data dealing with the manner in which alcohol and drugs affect performance in different modes of transportation.
Abstract
The first paper reports on the abuse of alcohol and drugs in aviation, rail, commercial trucking, maritime, and mass transit modes of transportation, and their implication for the public's safety. Another author reports on the results of a study of the epidemiology of alcohol and drugs in Canadian transportation; the results showed that a significant proportion (approximately 20 percent) of truck and bus drivers involved in collisions had been drinking alcohol. Other articles explore alcohol and pilot performance decrements, the safe use of medication by aircrew members, substance abuse countermeasures in the railroad industry, and the effectiveness of peer counseling and education in substance abuse prevention.
