DESIGN MODIFICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED FOR ACHIEVING A FUNCTIONAL VEHICLE WITH MAXIMUM WEIGHT REDUCTION, THEREBY ACHIEVING MAXIMUM FUEL ECONOMY.
Abstract
SPECIFIC MODIFICATIONS INCLUDE THE USE OF PLASTIC HOODS AND GRILLS, PLASTIC WINDOWS, ALUMINUM BUMPERS, PUSHED BACK REAR SEATS, AND OTHERS. ALL MODIFICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE BASE VEHICLE, A 4-DOOR COMPACT SEDAN. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS, SUCH AS EQUIPMENT STORAGE SPACE AND REAR SEAT HEADROOM, ARE ALSO PRESENTED. ONE OF THE OVERRIDING FACTORS WAS THAT THE FINAL LIFE-CYCLE COST OF THE VEHICLE BE COMPETITIVE WITH CURRENT PRODUCTION MODELS. SEE ALSO NCJ-34193, 34195, 34196, 34166, AND 34168.
