REPORT ON INNOVATIVE TREATMENT OF MENTALLY ILL OFFENDERS IN THE PROFESSOR POMPE CLINIC AT NYMEGEN, THE NETHERLANDS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES HOW TREATMENT IN THE CLINIC ORIGINALLY FOLLOWING THE CLINICAL PSYCHIATRIC PATTERN GRADUALLY DEVELOPED INTO A CLIENT-CENTERED APPROACH. INSTEAD OF THE CLASSICAL FOCUS ON RESOCIALIZATION AND CURE OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR, ATTENTION IS FOCUSSED ON THE THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STAFF AND INMATES. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE IMPACT OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS. HE ALSO DEALS WITH REACTIONS OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD, AND NOTES THAT PUBLICATION OF THE NEW IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES BY THE STAFF OF THE CLINIC SET OFF A STRONG REACTION IN THE PUBLIC. AS THE RESULT, THE (PRIVATE) CLINIC SUFFERED A BOYCOTT BY THE PENAL ADMINISTRATION, AND THE DIRECTOR RESIGNED. THE CLINIC HAS NOW RETURNED TO THE PRINCIPLES OF STRICT SECURITY AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALISM. --IN DUTCH
