AN EVALUATION FROM FIVE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES, OF A YOUTH PRETRIAL DIVERSIONARY COUNSELING PROGRAM IN PLACENTIA FOUNTAIN HILL, ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
Abstract
AN ANALYSIS OF CASE RECORDS INDICATES THAT MOST OF THE YOUTH INVOLVED ARE MALE, AGED 15 OR 16, EXHIBIT SCHOLASTIC AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS AT SCHOOL, HAVE NO PREVIOUS ARRESTS, AND ARE REFERRED BY POLICE. COUNSELING SERVICE FOR YOUTH AND FAMILY IS THROUGH TIME LIMITED SERVICE EPISODES. COUNSELING TECHNIQUES INCLUDE INDIVIDUAL, PEER AND FAMILY COUNSELING SESSIONS AS WELL AS INTERAGENCY COLLATERAL CONTACTS. PARENTS AND YOUTH REPORT THAT THE MOST HELPFUL PROCEDURE IS FOR THE YOUTH TO SEE THE COUNSELOR ALONE. INTERVIEWS WITH COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES INDICATE CONFIDENCE IN THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROGRAM. A COST COMPARISON INDICATES ALTERNATE ROUTES IS A LESS COSTLY ALTERNATIVE THAN THE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM. EACH PHASE OF THE EVALUATION IS ACCOMPANIED BY RELEVANT STATISTICS.
