Abstract
THE AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION IS THE LEGAL RESEARCH AFFILIATE OF THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION. ITS INSTITUTIONAL MISSION IS TO CONDUCT RESEARCH THAT WILL ENLARGE THE UNDERSTANDING OF LAW AND LEGAL INSTITUTIONS AND IMPROVE THEIR FUNCTIONING. RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN THE FOLLOWING GENERAL AREAS DURING 1978 IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED: THE LEGAL PROFESSION; THE EDUCATION OF LAWYERS; THE DELIVERY OF LEGAL SERVICES; LITIGATION, COURTS, AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION; ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES; HISTORY, DEVELOPMENT, APPLICATION, AND IMPACT OF SUBSTANTIVE LAWS; COMPUTERS AND THE LAW; CORPORATION LAW; CRIMINAL JUSTICE; AND LEGAL HISTORY. SPECIAL FOUNDATION PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: THE MEYER RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM, WHICH SPONSORS MODEST-SIZED EMPIRICAL RESEARCH PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY LAW FACULTY MEMBERS; VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAM, WHICH GIVES SELECTED SCHOLARLY PROFESSIONALS AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK FOR A TIME AWAY FROM THE DEMANDS OF CLASSES IN THE FULL-TIME RESEARCH ATMOSPHERE OF THE FOUNDATION; CONTRACT RESEARCH PROGRAM, WHICH CONTRACTS WITH SCHOLARS AT OTHER INSTITUTIONS TO PRODUCE DISCRETE, DEFINED ARTICLES ON SUBJECTS IN WHICH THEY ARE EXPERTS; SAMUEL POOL WEAVER ESSAY PROGRAM, WHICH ENGAGES RECOGNIZED CONSTITUTIONAL LAW SCHOLARS TO PREPARE ESSAYS ON SELECTED SUBJECTS; AND THE LEGAL HISTORY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH ENCOURAGES ORIGINAL RESEARCH IN ANGLO-AMERICAN LEGAL HISTORY. LIAISON RESEARCH SERVICE OF THE FOUNDATION IS DISCUSSED, AND PUBLICATIONS BY THE FOUNDATION DURING 1978 ARE LISTED, ALONG WITH THE TITLES OF PRESENTATIONS BY FOUNDATION STAFF GIVEN DURING THE YEAR. PERSONNEL OF THE FOUNDATION, AFFILIATED SCHOLARS FOR 1978, AND MEMBERS OF STANDING COMMITTEES AND PROJECT ADVISORY COMMITTEES ARE ALSO REPORTED. A FINANCIAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR ENDING AUGUST 31, 1978 IS INCLUDED. (RCB)
