Abstract
The applications in law enforcement, firefighting, and other public safety agencies are detailed. Individual sections focus on the law's purpose, its relationship to other Federal and State laws, the definition of disability, and the meaning of the concept "substantial limitation of a major life activity." Other concepts discussed include the record of impairment, qualified individuals with a disability, the specific prohibitions of discrimination, the duty to make reasonable accommodations, and the undue hardship defense. Further chapters discuss issues related to compliance with provisions regarding medical examinations, physical fitness and agility tests, the illegal use of drugs, alcoholism, collective bargaining, exceptions, and enforcement.
