Selected readings in this volume address provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), job descriptions in law enforcement, the impact of ADA on corrections, and procedural changes required by the ADA with respect to the selection of public safety applicants.
Abstract
Following an overview of the ADA, the volume focuses on law enforcement employment practices under Title I of the act. The section on job descriptions in law enforcement covers the Philadelphia Police Department's response to the ADA and job functions and critical tasks. Title II of the ADA defines requirements applicable to State and local governments that concern discrimination, structural accommodations, communications, grievance procedures, police programs and services, and program and service self- evaluation. The volume notes "invisible" disabilities, such as mental retardation and mental illness, communicating with deaf and hearing-impaired people, epilepsy, head injury and disability, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. The impact of ADA on corrections is discussed in terms of facility design, personnel screening and selection, and staff training. Procedural changes required by the ADA for public safety applicant selection are described, including conditional job offers, the qualified pool, and the rejection process.
