Annotation

This document contains three reports on subjects relevant to Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

Abstract

The ADA was signed into law by President George Bush on July 26, 1990. Its purpose is to eliminate discrimination against the 43 million Americans who have various types of disabilities. A preliminary draft entitled "The Americans With Disabilities Act and Criminal Justice: An Overview" runs through the basics of the ADA, such as who is covered and for what purposes, and what constitutes disability. A glossary of legal terms and suggestions for nonoffensive names are included. Another preliminary draft, "The Americans With Disabilities Act: Hiring Criminal Justice Professionals," also runs through the basics, and discusses how the ADA affect hiring practices. Included are the rules regarding inquiry into the medical condition of job applicants, and a quiz that tests the knowledge of the reader on this matter. A report entitled "Meeting the Multiple Challenges of the Americans With Disabilities Act" identifies issues and personnel challenges relevant to corrections settings. Included are recommendations for compliance with ADA mandates. Endnotes and 8 attachments
