Relying on official statistics collected by the 22 Federal agencies represented in the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, this 2010 Forum report assesses the well-being of the Nation's children for 40 indicators in 7 domains.
Abstract
The domains are family and social environment, economic circumstances, health care, physical environment and safety, behavior, education, and health. An overview of the report's findings indicates that in the area of health care, health insurance coverage rates for children increased; and the percentage of preterm births declined for the second straight year. In the area of education, eighth-grade math scores reached an all-time high. In the area of health, teen smoking was at its lowest rate since data collection began. The adolescent birth rate declined after a 2-year increase. In the domain of economic circumstances, however, the percentage of children whose parents had secure employment was the lowest since 1996, and the percentage living in poverty was the highest since 1998. The percentage of children in "food-insecure" households was the highest since monitoring began. The report ends with a summary table that shows recent changes in all 40 indicators of children's well-being. 15 figures, 1 table, and 40 notes
