In this Special Issue, the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics documents and assesses the well-being of youth as they transition into adulthood.
Abstract
The major sections of this report provide data related to the following domains of young adulthood: demographics; education; economic circumstances; family formation; civic, social, and personal behavior; and health and safety. The section on demographics includes data not only on demographic characteristics of young adults, but also group quarters, military participation, and imprisonment rates. Data related to education address educational attainment, enrollment rates, college costs and indebtedness, and young adults who are neither enrolled in school nor working. Data on young adults' economic circumstances pertain to involvement in the labor force, median earnings, housing problems, and health insurance. Data on family formation relate to living arrangements and births to young adult women. The variables related to civic, social, and personal behavior are voting, time use, leisure-time physical activity, cigarette smoking, and contraception. Data relevant to health and safety cover the usual source of health care, obesity, substance-use disorder, major depressive episode, treatment for a sexually transmitted disease, and non-fatal violent victimization rates. Data sources are described, and extensive detailed tables are provided.
