California parolees who took part in a drug treatment program consisting of a 9-month to 12-month therapeutic community in prison followed by parole and entry into a community-based residential drug abuse program were studied with respect to their rate of return to treatment.
Abstract
The participants entered the community program between November 1991 and February 29, 1996. They previously had participated in the Amity Therapeutic Community Substance Abuse Program located at the Richard J. Donovan Facility in San Diego, Calif. Those who participated in treatment at an Amity Community Facility for 90 days were defined as completing treatment. Dropouts were those who did not stay the full 90 days. Statistics on returns to custody were collected 12 months and 24 months after parole: 132 of 188 participants completed the community residential program. A total of 16.7 percent of the completers returned to State prison custody within 12 months, compared to 42.9 percent of the community program dropouts. One hundred twenty-six of the 188 participants had been on parole 24 months or more at the time of the study. A total of 27.6 percent of the completers and 61.5 percent of the dropouts returned to State prison custody. No statistical difference existed between the groups for the number of days on parole to a first return to custody or for the number of days in custody following a first return.
