RESULTS OF A COMPREHENSIVE DATA COLLECTION EFFORT ON 4,146 MALE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY PAROLEES, PROVIDING INFORMATION ON OFFENDER INTELLIGENCE FACTORS THAT MAY BE RELATED TO PAROLE SUCCESS.
Abstract
THIS CALIFORNIA BASED PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO ORGANIZE THE RESULTS OF AN EXTENSIVE DATA COLLECTION ON THE YOUTHFUL OFFENDER AND TO PROVIDE A RESOURCE FOR THE CORRECTIONAL THEORIST WORKING WITH THIS MOST IMPORTANT OFFENDER GROUP. BACKGROUND DATA, PERSONALITY AND OTHER TEST RESULTS, ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS AND APTITUDES, AND PSYCHIATRIC FACTORS, AS WELL AS OFFENSE RELATED INFORMATION AND THE RATINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF INSTITUTIONAL STAFFS WERE OBTAINED ON 4,146 MALE CALIFORNIA YOUTH AUTHORITY PAROLEES. THIS EFFORT WAS ENVISIONED AS A PREREQUISITE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TYPOLOGICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS THAT MAY ULTIMATELY INFLUENCE THEIR TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION. VOLUME 2 PROVIDES AN EXTENSIVE EXAMINATION OF INTELLIGENCE IN RELATION TO DELINQUENCY AND PAROLE SUCCESS. IT INCLUDES A DISCUSSION OF THE BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE OF THE STUDY, A REVIEW OF CONCEPTUAL ISSUES IN CLASSIFICATION AND GROUNDED THEORY, AND A DISCUSSION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY. A LITERATURE REVIEW OF OTHER STUDIES OF DELINQUENT INTELLIGENCE IS ALSO PRESENTED AND THE TECHNIQUES OF THE DATA DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS ARE EXPLAINED. INDIVIDUAL CASE HISTORY INFORMATION AND A DISCUSSION OF INTELLIGENCE FACTORS OF THE STUDY POPULATION ARE ALSO PROVIDED. AN ANALYSIS OF INTELLIGENCE FACTORS IN RELATION TO ACADEMIC, VOCATIONAL, PERSONALITY, PSYCHIATRIC, AND OFFENSE RELATED FACTORS IS THEN FEATURED. AMONG THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY ARE THAT WARDS OF AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE DO NOT SHOW ANY DIFFERENCES IN PAROLE SUCCESS RATES AMONG THE ETHNIC GROUPS; THAT WARDS OF BORDERLINE AND DULL NORMAL INTELLIGENCE WITH SEVERE DRINKING PROBLEMS ARE PARTICULARLY LESS SUCCESSFUL ON PAROLE; AND THAT MENTAL ABILITY AND INTELLECTUAL POTENTIAL FOR THE YOUTHS ARE GENERALLY PRESENT BUT ARE NOT BEING PRODUCTIVELY DEVELOPED OR UTILIZED. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT THE DISTRIBUTION ON INTELLIGENCE FOLLOWS THE NORMAL CURVE WITH SLIGHT OVERREPRESENTATION IN THE BELOW AVERAGE CATEGORY OF DULL NORMAL. THIS DISTRIBUTION REFUTES THE COMMON NOTION THAT DELINQUENT POPULATIONS ARE COMPOSED MAINLY OF RETARDED OR BORDERLINE DEFECTIVE INDIVIDUALS. A SUPPLEMENTAL DATA MAP GIVES A GRAPHIC PICTURE OF CLASSIFICATION FACTORS AND COMPARATIVE DATA ON INTELLIGENCE CLASSIFICATION SUBGROUPS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)
